My Students

Studying a novel does not have to be the tedious experience so many of us had in high school. Heart of Darkness and The Grapes of Wrath may be required classics, but most students are left uninspired with these stories. I am looking for a novel that will cultivate a love of reading.

My students are a smart, savvy group of 10th graders full of energy and passion.

They are athletes, debaters, leaders, gamers, skaters, tweeters and snapchatters. They love reading books that "call their attention" and shun books that are not immediately accessible to their reading levels. The "textbook room" at our high school is full of novels and texts held together by duct tape. Because of recent budget cuts, many classrooms ballooned to 40+ students whereas a few years ago, our classroom numbers were much smaller. Class sets of novels stayed at 30. My students need new literature. They love reading. We just need to provide the books.

My Project

Using Slaughterhouse 5, my students will be able to draw connections between the bombing of Dresden, the Vietnam War, and World War II. This novel will further their understanding of historical events covered in World History. Students will conduct research and investigations into the effects of war and PTSD. Study of this novel will also include informational reading surrounding the events concepts in the novel.

Slaughterhouse Five is a novel about war, aliens, time travel and tragedy.

That it deals with such harrowing and bloody events with such dark humor and tone make it a perfect choice for a high school setting. My students learn about war from movies, video games and not much else. Slaughterhouse Five delivers themes and narratives that will inform my students of current world events and will give them a modern perspective of tragedy that so often is sanitized for entertainment purposes.
