Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I'm writing in the hopes that you will reward some very talented, driven 3rd graders with the materials they need to reach their potential. I teach in a high-performing, under-funded school in Brooklyn, where gains in achievement vastly outpace our sky-rocketing free lunch percentage. I am so proud to teach my students, and I love that the kids have a great school to attend in an area where not-so-great schools still flourish. However, although the Donors Choose community has, without question, come to our aid in the past, we still have considerable needs when it comes to materials and supplies. The area of need I write about today is one of books. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the way reading is taught in modern New York City, but if you'll indulge me, I'll provide a brief summary of what we do to improve students' literacy. Gone are the days of class "readers" and round-robin reading--now students are evaluated and placed on an alphabetized reading level, whereby the teacher can work to raise their decoding and comprehension skills throughout the year. (For mid-year: Advanced 3rd graders are typically level O-Q; levels M and N are right on target; and anyone on L or below is struggling.) It is an immeasurably superior method to the one of old, for instruction is geared to each student, and each student learns specific reading-level appropriate strategies and skills to improve both decoding and comprehension abilities. It takes a lot of work on the part of the teacher, but it can work like a dream for the kids. Of course, it is difficult to serve all students' needs without a rich, inviting library. Donors Choose participants have given many books and materials in the past, and for those generous impulses my students and I remain grateful. However, I have recently recognized a lack in my library, and it is stunning: I have plenty of low-level read-alongs for my struggling readers, but lack similar materials for my advanced students. Read-alongs are such a great tool, for they engage both the decoding and comprehension muscles. I have identified two sets of read-alongs that would serve my advanced readers' needs quite well, as the books are leveled on either P, Q, or R. Thank you for reading this, and I wish you the best!
