Help me give my students items to help them spread compassion within our classroom Learning Community, our school, and outside the walls of our school by making unique cards and jewelry to share.
I can't wait to empower the lives of my incoming 4th graders in the realm of Social Emotional Learning by teaching them the importance of compassion. I believe that my students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by sharing and giving compassion through the items in our cart.
For example, after reading the book "Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You" students will learn about learning disabilities as well as elderly people within our community.
After this learning I will create monthly activities for them to share their compassion with others. They will make cards, give inspiring messages, make compassionate scratch notes, create origami crafts, and make bracelets for others to share their compassion.
I also know that my students will show compassion to their garden salsa plant that they will grow and care for, with compassion, in our Learning Community. If they can care for their plant, they can care for others compassionately.
The students in my school have not only been impacted by Covid, they have also been impacted by the East Troublesome Fire. I had 2 students in my class last year who lost everything due to fire. I know that these events, and my project will help my students alleviate the suffering of others.
I will measure the success of my students' understanding of compassion by a pre and post-assessment. Prior to all of the lessons that will come out of this project I will have students write what they think compassion is. At the end of the year, I will give them the same informal assessment. Finally, we will make a class chart of how we can continue to share compassion with others in our lives to make a difference in the world.
