We have the opportunity to focus specifically on social-emotional learning with our students. It is a space dedicated to all feelings, big or small. We intend to use our room as a create safe space to give students time to de-escalate, learn about their emotions and connect with their peers.
We use grade-level appropriate lessons to teach our students about relationships, emotions, inclusivity, and diversity.
The resources we are requesting are to create an inclusive environment that allows our students to touch, or fidget with different textures in our room. There is research that indicates that fidgeting for students who are anxious, upset, hyperactive, or any other feeling of discomfort is eased by various tactile materials. We want to place a large fuzzy rug in our room for our kids to feel like they can relax and be in an inclusive environment that makes them feel safe.
In our whole class lessons, we are requesting books related to emotion, circumstance, appearance, neuro-abilities, and others to expand our student's framework of thinking to promote a harmonious aptitude within our school building to lead with empathy.
Outside of our whole class lessons, we are implementing the CASEL framework to extend to our student's communities and families. Our hope is to connect with our students and their families to make school and home places of peace and comfort.
