Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This past summer I had the opportunity to take a one-week intensive three-credit course at the American Folk Art Museum. Condensed to one sentence, the truly great thing about folk art, from the educator's perspective, is that folk artists are, by definition, pretty much untrained. If you've ever been around second and third graders, you may know that this is the age when many of them give up on art because they believe they are, and I quote, “no good.” For my South Bronx 2nd graders, museum trips are rare and our class has minimal art supplies and even less time to use them. In second grade, the academic emphasis is, understandably, on reading, writing, math and beginning test preparation skills. Sadly, and almost unbelievably, under the current educational policies 2nd grade is the last school year without standardized tests. While we will be working hard toward our long-term goal of passing the third-grade tests, in some ways this is the kids' last chance to have unfettered fun. The American Folk Art Museum offers excellent, inexpensive educational programs for New York City students. The programs include a 45 minute focused gallery tour and a 45-minute hands-on workshop activity. While I personally am content to do art for art's sake, the first course does reflect the Social Studies curriculum, particularly the second grade theme of community. In addition, the second course focuses on the work of Martin Ramirez, a self-taught Latino artist who overcame great personal adversity to achieve success. The majority of my students are Latino and, in fact, I have taught three or four “Ramirezes” in my six years at PS 130. I am very excited about the prospect of taking my young students to AFAM, a small, friendly museum, literally in the shadow of MOMA. It is a place where all the artists are regular people who persevered independently and successfully for the sheer love of their art. I think it will be a fun and inspirational experience and the workshops should give the young artists in my class a chance to believe in themselves and their own work. I know it will be a very memorable experience for my students. Thank you for your consideration.
