Everyone Deserves a Seat...

My students need new desks that will promote student collaboration as well as comfort. Currently, the desks they are using are too small, making them very uncomfortable.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our fifth-grade students can be considered a "melting pot" of sorts. Each one coming from a different background, possessing a unique story. It's the differences amongst my students that make them stand out in a class of their own. Our school serves roughly 351 students, most deriving from low-income, socio-economic backgrounds. The most important thing for us as a school community is to provide a stable education as well as the basic need to be comfortable.

My students love to learn, and love to have fun and be comfortable while doing so.

Their eagerness and perseverance are what drives me to push myself each day to provide them with what they need to become successful.

My students consider themselves to be future doctors, lawyers, teachers, and politicians. They appreciate any opportunity to work on arts and crafts projects. They love to work in small groups with one another to practice peer collaboration. They also enjoy the freedom to choose with whom they work.

My Project

Our school places a focus on peer collaboration and interaction amongst students. We believe in readying our students for the progressive future ahead. Interacting with others in a collaborative way is a part of this preparation. What makes this task challenging is the current state of our desks.

It becomes difficult for students to stay on task when they are uncomfortable with their seating.

Funding from this project will go towards receiving new octagon shaped desks and attachable metal book boxes that are the appropriate height for my students' age group. The shape of the desks helps to arrange students more comfortably within a classroom setting and promote peer collaboration in groups and partnerships.

These desks will be used daily by students to help master the skills of creating projects, conduct group discussions, and work hands-on through the project-based approach.

This project will serve a dual function, and for many generations of students to come. Not only will the students I currently work will with benefit from the fruits of this project but the classes I hope to serve throughout my career will as well.
