Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day my students sit on the carpet for our morning meeting & recite the famous Dr. Seuss quote: "Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!" Our classroom is a safe haven for many of my students that do not receive the encouragement and support they need outside of school.

I work in a Title 1 school where 100% of students receive free lunch.

I have many students in my classroom that come from various disadvantaged situations. There are also several English Languages Learners in our class. These different barriers make it challenging to meet today's standards in education when we do not have the technology to provide them with the individualized instruction they desperately need.

My Project

By having 3 iPad Minis in our classroom, I will be able to have a small group work on individualized reading skills that they need to practice. This will assist my struggling students achieve higher gains in learning. It also will help enhance and excel those students that have already acquired certain reading skills and are eager to learn more. Comprehension and fluency will be skills that are particularly focused on during their small group iPad time. They will be used in our 2 hour reading block as well as our school mandated "Power Hour." These tools will help reach my students on their level as they engage in learning activities that are both fun and customized for them to achieve mastery.

Many of my students begin the school year already behind in many subjects, but reading skills are our biggest challenge.

Even a student who shines in math will struggle in higher grades if they do not develop a strong foundation in reading in 1st grade. If we can bridge this gap early on and show them that they can succeed, they will continue to strive to meet higher expectations in the classroom and in life.
