My Students

“Walk through life like a writer.” - Lucy Calkins. My students have so many stories to tell. They have diverse experiences and love to share their daily lives - with each other, and with me! I want to make the connection between their lives at home and in the community with school experiences.

Our school is located in an urban, high needs community.

Parents take pride in the school and many volunteer in classrooms and in the parent center for the benefit of the students. The students are bright, energetic, and love to learn. They need materials that the school can't always provide to engage and connect them to real-world learning.

My Project

Teachers and students both, utilize their writer’s notebooks to plant seeds of writing (ideas): making observations in lists, drawings, and sensory descriptions; collecting information around topics of interest; collecting dialog from conversations; drafting; and quick-writes. Students use STEM notebooks to ask questions, define problems, collect data, answer questions, plan out and describe the processes of solving problems, all the while revisiting entries to discuss, collaborate, and argue. The notebooks are personalized containers of knowledge that students will keep and reflect upon for years to come.

Imagine...students focused on observing the world around them, writing, conversing, and reading about topics they are interested in.

Students excel when they make connections across the curriculum by engaging in content areas such as science and engineering while learning reading, writing, speaking, and listening. With notebooks we replicate the work of real world writer’s and scientists/engineers.
