My Project

Our school serves student who come from a variety of backgrounds in an African American community. 99% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. I have students who live with grandparents, foster parents, single parents and we even serve students who are homeless. A lot of times students who come to school late did not take the time to brush their teeth, use mouthwash or deodorant before leaving their house. Their focus was just getting school. For many of my students, who still start their day at daycare or some kind of before school/after school program, they will have access to basic hygiene products. Having a few necessities at school, will make them feel more comfortable after arriving late. It will also allow me to send these items home with students who need them.

Middle school is a tough age for students.

Maturing from little kids to adolescence and going through puberty can be brutal. Body changes happen sometimes overnight and not everyone has a home where things like puberty are talked about freely. The girls in my building sometimes start their menstrual cycle at school for the very first time. It is very important that my school has items for those situations to make the experience less traumatic. Having these products on hand allows me to make girl emergency pouches for them to carry in their bag. My school requires clear bags, so not all young ladies want to carry items in their bag. This allows the girls to come get supplies without being embarrassed.
