My Students
My urban school is 70% eligible for free or reduced price lunch. It is 95% children of color. 65% of students speak a language other than English at home. We welcome immigrants from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Tonga, Samoa, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Haiti. We also have a large African-American population, and a small number of Native students.
Despite our struggles with poverty and language barriers, the school culture is one of inclusivity, tolerance and kindness.
We set high academic standards for every child. We expect at least one year's growth from every student's individual starting point each year; 1.5 for students starting below grade level. The sign board on our busy street reads: "Choose Love." We do.
My Project
Students need to write and make creative projects in order to learn, requiring poster board, composition books, tissues, paper, pencils tape, markers, envelopes, duct tape, push pins, and other school supplies. For a classroom to function, we need supplies from Kleenex to tape to envelopes. Our under-funded schools are able to provide none of these things.
Every year I ask DonorsChoose.org to help support my classroom by providing these bare necessities.
And every year, my students and I receive these gifts with gratitude, recognizing the generosity that lowers the stress on a financially strained system, and lowers the stress on kids, whose families can't afford to provide supplies.
More than half of students from low‑income households
