Everyday School Supplies

My students need binders and paper, because many of their families struggle to provide school supplies. Our classroom also needs a new boombox; the old one eats tapes!

My Students

In our classroom, we are avid writers. We take notes, we answer reflective questions, we write essays, and we write poems and stories. We need paper everyday. AND we need binders to organize our papers, so that we can separate our notes from our vocabulary from our writing endeavors.

We are a diverse public urban high school with a 70% free and reduced lunch rate.

Many of our students come from homes where English is not the first language. Most of our students do not have parents who graduated from college; many do not have parents who graduated from high school. Despite these barriers, students, teachers and administrators are united in our mission to prepare our kids beautifully for the world that awaits them. We have high academic and ethical standards and a school culture of tolerance and mutual support. We embrace and learn from our differences. People who visit our school are often surprised by how NICE our kids are. They hold open doors, and help strangers find their way around. Our test scores show that all students can succeed, if they have the support they need.

My Project

I am asking for binders and paper, because after 7 years teaching, I have decided this is the best way to organize our classwork. I have not asked for enough for every student (I usually have about 150), but I want to be able to offer free supplies to students whose families are unable to provide money for school equipment. I am also asking for a boom box to replace the one if my room that is eating cassette tapes. We have a number of our books available on tape, and certain learners process oral language much better than written, so these tapes are an essential aid for them as we read high level fiction.

I try to create as stress free a classroom as possible.

Neurological research shows that learning occurs much more readily in a relaxed and eager brain. I don't want my students worrying about whether they have money for paper and binders. I want the students who need help to be able to read along to books on tape. When they walk into my classroom, I want it to be a pleasant, joyous and successful experience so that they will become lifetime readers, writers and learners.
