Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One very important thing I love and value about my students and my role in their lives is how much the look to me for guidance. They love to do as I do and say as I say. Something that I value very much, and my student know this, is fitness. My classroom is covered in my old race bibs as well as my Ironman Triathlon flags. The kids ask me to tell them about my races and activities all the time. I am also an avid step counter. I religiously try to hit my 10k steps a day.

Recently, our school opened our playground back up to the kids, and I decided this would be a good time for me to catch up on my steps.

Well, soon I had a group of students joining me. They were so excited to get in their steps as well.

My school is located in an area where obesity and diabetes run rampant. It bring so much joy to me to have my students excited about movement. The walks have not only been good for us to keep moving, but have served as a nice time for mental wellness and reflection as well.

It was during one of these walks that it dawned on me that Donors Choose would be the perfect platform to really get my student into our daily walks and even take it further into their day by getting them each their own pedometer.

I hope to incorporate goals and competition to motivate the kids, and hopefully instill in them something that they can take with them through life and pass on to their own families.
