This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what a box-like 20 inch television looks like? That is what my 22 students use to view any educational VHS and DVD in the classroom. Forget about quality of sounds or pictures, any student would be lucky to be sitting closer to the television to see the pictures more clearly.
My first grade students are from low economic status families with about 70% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Their families are immigrants from China. Most of their parents have minimal education and are blue-collar workers. English is their second language. My students did not get much exposure in reading in their earlier years due to parents' language barrier. School is the only place for them to improve their language skills. My school is a public school in California. We offer Spanish and Cantonese Bi-literacy classes for our K-5 grade students. We believe in improving students' thinking skills. We face many financial challenges every year. Our problems including raising funds to keep classroom teachers, purchasing daily school supplies, updating technology, and purchasing books for students to take home. It's been most exhausting raising funds just to get some basic needs to help my children to have a better learning environment with a variety of learning resources.
My Project
In order to provide 21st Century Learning opportunity, I need to improve technological equipment in my class. Can you imagine a classroom that uses a large screen television that has the capability to connect with the computer for lessons to be taught so that every child can see wherever they might be sitting! What about students who can actually see clear pictures of a science specimen showing and hear the information from a video from the television? A television seems to be so basic for any place. Unfortunately, the one television I have is the old box-like, 20 inches television that was donated to my class about 10 years ago. This old television is good enough to be put in an antique store and has served its purpose for 2 decades. There are squiggly lines appear at the bottom of the screen and with an annoying buzzing sound with the loud volume setting. My poor students can barely make out of what they see from a 20 inches television sitting in the back of the room.
A Child's Dream can be so simple!
If every student can have the equal opportunity to learn with the right and updated resources in the classroom, he/she can succeed and soar high! I want to provide this chance for all my students to learn using the more advanced technology. Please help me help my students to have a new 37 inches television with VGA and HDMI inputs with the capability to connect to the computer in the classroom so that creative lessons can be learned and dreams can come true!
