My students need math and reading workbooks to learn basic skills in preparation for statewide testing in April of 2009. The Spectrum Series I am ordering will address this need. In addition, it is critical that I deliver individualized instruction to each student. The portable easel which can be used for small group and individualized instruction will facilitate attainment of this objective. Additionally, to foster good classroom management and save time, the erasable pens are indispensable tools. Having them available for my students would eliminate trips to the pencil sharpener, which interrupts the delivery of instruction. Finally, to help students prepare for the mathematics section of the statewide tests, it would be helpful to have a set of calculators at their disposal, so that they could practice using various functions. I would appreciate any assistance in funding this project, as I believe these materials will have a direct, positive impact on my students' achievement levels.

I believe that all students deserve to experience the satisfaction of realizing an increase in their skills on a daily basis. With the use of the Spectrum Series books and other resources I am requesting, I aim to impart the enjoyment of achievement to each of my 10 special needs third and fifth grade students.
Upon my recent return to an elementary classroom in my fourth year with DCPS, I was greeted by issues just as urgent as when I taught elementary students three years ago. I teach a mixed class of special needs students in the third and fifth grades, and have third graders that perform at a higher level in both Reading and Mathematics than two of my fifth graders, who currently perform between a first and second grade level in both subjects. In this era of inclusion, my challenge as a special education teacher is to ensure that all my students have adequate skills to be able to perform in the general education classroom in a meaningful way. Over the years, based on the advice of some veteran teachers whom I respect, I have turned to the Spectrum series as helpful tools, particularly when I taught middle and high schools.
When a fifth grade student struggles with basic sight words, purposeful and targeted strategies are needed to address such deficiencies. I believe the sound strategies needed are embedded in the Spectrum Series books.
Also, when teaching a mixed-abilities class, I must ensure that I reach every student, and the additional resources would help me do so.
I will use the Spectrum Series to teach students basic Mathematics and Reading skills that are needed to be successful on the upcoming statewide assessments. In this era of high-stakes testing, teachers are required to demonstrate a student's growth, which will be assessed primarily using results of their performance on the statewide tests as a primary indicator of success. I have
found that the subject matters covered in the Spectrum Series are easily accessible by special needs students and, because students enjoy working with the books, they experience growth.
The additional sources are just as much an integral part of my teaching strategy as my use of the Spectrum Series. For instance, the easel and pads would augment the limited blackboard space in my classroom. The blackboards are severely worn, so much so that there is no space to write. Jim Grant, the renowned facilitator on "differentiated instruction," recommends using erasable pens to eliminate trips to the pencil sharpener, which saves time, so I plan to implement that strategy in my classroom. Finally, I need a calculator for each student, so that each could become skillful in using the instrument for solving problems.
I stated in my heading that raising student achievement is a community effort. I invite you, should you have a burning desire to make a difference in the lives of these students, to join me on this journey to impart the lifelong gift of learning to students whom many least expect to succeed. My students and I would be most appreciative of your generosity.
