My Students

A child's greatest task is to learn social and communication skills. The ability to get along with others and to effectively get wants and needs met are the most important tools a child can have to meet future learning demands.

I am an Inclusion Facilitator who works in a very large urban district with students with moderate to severe disabilities in the general education classroom.

Most of my students have autism and are non-verbal or have limited speech. Over the past 5 years I have had the privilege of working with several students who have learned to type to communicate. These non-verbal students with autism have been treated for much of their lives as if they were mentally deficient and not capable of learning beyond that of a primary-age education. Thus they were trapped in their silence. I now know that if they are taught to type to communicate, they have a lot to say and are very gifted communicators! With new technology, it is my hope to help many more non-verbal students who are trapped in their silence to find a voice in the world.

My Project

The new Apple iPad2 with Bluetooth Keyboard enables me to hold the keyboard up for my students at their eye level (or wherever is needed) as they type each letter. The iPad sits propped up on the table so the student can see what they are typing. Word prediction is available to speed up the process. When the student has finished typing, he/she pushes the "speak" button and a human sounding voice speaks the words out loud. I plan on attending a professional development conference this summer to practice this skill with non-verbal students who are at various stages of learning to type to communicate. I also need to familiarize myself with various applications for typing such as Proloquo4 Text and Assistive Chat. My current students and future students will benefit immensely as I improve at teaching them how to type to communicate. The better skilled I am, the sooner they can show us what they know because lack of speech is not the same as lack of understanding.

The importance of technology is often stressed in education.

Our District has pledged to provide every student with iPads in the "near future." My non-verbal students with autism need to learn to type to communicate now more than ever.
