I recently read a quote from a teacher that stated: "There are no kids who hate reading; they hate the perception of themselves as readers in comparison to others." Every child deserves a positive literacy experience. Every child deserves to be part of a group in which they are valued.
I want to empower my readers.
I don't want them to feel inferior to their peers in my classroom because of their reading ability. Over half of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch which often limits their access to books at home and restricts their literacy experiences. Many of my students do not see themselves as readers. Being a part of a book club will help alleviate this problem. Reading and talking about books with their friends helps them to feel like they belong and to believe that they are readers.
My Project
We are in the process of starting book clubs, a social activity which is shown to motivate readers. I want my students to have many choices when choosing books for our book clubs. But more importantly, I want to have enough books for them to be able to take the books home. I have over 100 students and in order for them to take a book home, get lost in the words and connect with the characters, I need many choices.
I want to instill in them a love of reading, and I can do that by handing each of them (all 100) a book and giving them a safe environment in which they can thrive.
These books will give my readers the security of being part of a group where there is no need for comparison.
Every student will be able to not only participate in book clubs by reading in the classroom, but to continue the reading experience at home. I want my students to be proud to carry home a book, and I want them to feel valuable as a reader. Every child deserves that.
