My Students

I teach 90 adolescents everyday, but they also teach me something new each day. As a teacher, I hope to help my students plant seeds of learning, to explore new ideas, to gain a shared experiences, to become the type of creative, literate thinkers to succeed in college, to do well at work, to have meaningful conversations, and to find solutions to present and future problems. Our future is in the hands of these young adults and I take my job very seriously.

My Project

Community is everything. When students feel like they belong, they are more likely to become active participants in the learning environment. Whenever I am visiting a retirement home, people are always happily working together on a community puzzle. The reason puzzles are so fascinating at any age is because the human brain is hard wired to want to solve mysteries.

Puzzles quite simply are a great tool to bring people together at any age.

With my last donor’s choose grant, I was able to curate a great collection of puzzles that my students are so excited to solve. My new dilemma is that some puzzle pieces are accidentally falling on the floor. While I have found all of the fallen pieces, it would be so helpful to have a board with little drawers to sort and keep the puzzle organized so no pieces get lost any more.

Now, you may be asking, when are students going to be having any time to work on solving these puzzles? Shouldn't they be working on reading and writing standards? To answer those questions, yes we hustle and focus on learning standards during every minute of class. And since we work so hard during class time, I give students a physical and mental break during the passing period and that is when many students will gather around the back counter to work on the puzzle. You'd be surprised what can get accomplished in a four minute break.

Lastly, another major focus at our school is social and emotional learning (SEL). These puzzles will be a part of that focus in my classroom. Thank you for considering donating to this project.
