Our school is a special school with many interesting and challenging students. As a second grade teacher, it is my goal to meet the many diverse needs of my students.

Many of my students come from homes in desperate financial situations. There is little time available for learning classic children's games while the families struggle to survive. These students don't have a lot of the cultural background that others take for granted. Other students in my class are blessed with many economic advantages. One thing that I've discovered is that their families, too, are also busy with little time to spend as a family. Much of these children's time is spent on sports and other lessons or playing electronic games. They are also lacking the necessary skills of how to entertain themselves with simpler toys and games. These problems with both sets of students become very apparent when winter arrives in Ohio. Instead of being able to play on the playground, the students have to spend daily recess time in the classroom. Many times this leads to behavior problems because the students don't know how to play with each other.

All of my students will benefit from having a variety of games and building items to explore and play with during recess. They will learn how to cooperate and work with other students. In addition they will be learning classic games that have been played by children for many years. Students will also be occupied in meaningful ways instead of becoming bored then perhaps getting into trouble.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to spend indoor recess time learning in many different ways. These games will help the students academically and socially. More importantly, they will have the opportunity to be exposed to many classic toys and games that serve as a common experience for most American children. These experiences will serve as a common bond with my current students and as a source of background knowledge for the remainder of their lives.
