My Students

My students are 9 and 10-year-old beautiful children. They are just starting fifth grade and on the way to entering a new era; junior high school.

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." John Dewey.

They are wonderful people with varied talents and together they work amazingly well to help each other reach goals. Our school is an inner-city, multicultural, low-income, Title I school. I hope to help them improve their lives.

My Project

What do plants need to grow? Just like people, there are many different types of plants and each type of plant has different needs. However, the basic needs remain the same. My class is a mix of fully remote in and blended learning students. Even those students who are fully remote can participate in this hands-on activity. Hands-on resources support learning differences and will help students with varied learning abilities. Together we will grow TickleMe plants (AKA: Mimosa pudica sensitive plant). It responds to the slightest touch or stress by closing up their leaves. Its a great strategy.

Just like this sensitive plant, people can also have a strategy to help them calm down and reduce stress.

Its natural to need a break, meditate or take some quiet time to de-stress.

Those students who are fully remote will receive their kit in the mail. The other blended learning students will receive their kit when their cohort is in-person. All students will grow their plants at home and share this social-emotional learning experience with their family members as well as their classmates virtually. It will be a special experience for students to plant the seeds, nurture them daily through the stages of growth, and watch these amazing plants respond to a stress by meditating!! With your help, my students will understand the magical experience of self care.
