My Students
My students live in a low income community making us a Title I school which is considered high poverty. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to participate and learn new sports outside of our Physical Education classroom.
Most of our students are first generation immigrants from countries all over the world and have not been introduced to many of the traditional sports in the United States.
My goal as a physical educator is to spark a love for physical fitness and introduce activities that promote lifelong fitness. At my school, most of the students are English language learners and have difficulty building relationships with each other. They have found common ground when learning new sports.
My Project
My students are very energetic and active learners. When they heard about the sport of European handball they fell in love. It combines two of their favorite activities basketball and soccer into one fun filled sport.
Part of my teaching philosophy is to give my students opportunities to experience and learn new sports they never would have otherwise.
The modified European handballs will allow my students to learn the skills and fluidity of the sport in a safe and encouraging environment. The nets will provide a genuine game like setting for students to use the skills they have learned in this unit as well as improving their teamwork and overall communication. Building confidence early on will create success overall.
