My Project

This is my first year teaching fourth grade math and science. I want to get my students excited about these subjects in a way that lasts their whole lives.

With activities like constructing drawbridges in the Building Brick STEM Challenge Kit and following a manual to build a helicopter propeller on a circuit board that shoots up into the air, students will see science in action.

Students will get hooked on the wonder and delight of science and math, because they will experience what it's like to build something that makes a cool sound or push a magnet without even touching it. Students will also learn the process of trial and error and persistence in attempting to reach a goal.

My students love to create. Whenever they get a chance, they will head straight for the building blocks and magnets, or even plain paper and colored pencils to draw something amazing. The building activities in this project are not limited to science, either. Students will explore what it means to build a fraction or a decimal with the Magnetic Fraction tiles and the Building Fractions Activity Center. Fractions and decimals can be difficult for students to comprehend, but with these tools, they will have something concrete to handle and manipulate to develop their conceptual math skills.
