Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach multiple grades at Pittsburg High School, which is a Title One school. I inherited one of the semester-long electives in our Social Science Department, Ethnic Studies, from a teacher who has left our district for another. I am really looking forward to opening a dialogue with my students on the subjects of ethnicity, race, and multiculturalism throughout the course, but have found myself in a situation where I am taking over a class with no materials and am essentially building it up from scratch. This is a huge problem because, without a textbook for the course, the students may find it difficult to view the subject from multiple perspectives. After much research into various books I could adopt as a “textbook” for the course, I finally happened upon Robert Takaki’s “A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America.” Takaki’s book is an excellent fit for the course for several reasons. His writing is academic, but not so difficult that it would be too hard for a high school student to read. Takaki’s book is also written in a narrative format which covers African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America—a rich mix of ethnicities which will help give our class discussions a focus without being too diverse or too broad. His book also pulls from many sources including personal experiences, literature, and our own nation’s history. I would greatly appreciate 25 copies of Takaki’s book to use as the foundation of my Ethnic Studies course for the upcoming school year. To understand Ethnic Studies and Multiculturalism in today’s society will give my students such an advantage as they leave our school for their adult lives. Takaki’s book, “A Different Mirror,” will help them understand that, although they will encounter many different types of people in the world, they have all been through similar circumstances regardless of their ethnicity—that there is no one “wronged” ethnic population and that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. As a donor, you have the opportunity to help me teach the next generation of adults this valuable lesson as they transition from their childhood to becoming productive members of our great society.
