This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me bring my students integrated Ethnic Studies and literacy curriculum for years to come! My school uses a curriculum that proposes third graders read "Peter Pan" for a whole unit. I know that my students need and deserve a text that is much more relevant, interesting, fun, and challenging. I discovered "Jo Jo Makoons", a chapter book about a young Ojibwe girl living on a reservation, and created my own unit around the book that integrates Native American Studies with standards-aligned literacy skills. Students love the book so far and have the opportunity to learn about character development and complex language while also learning about the rich cultural experience of a kid on a reservation. I made photocopies of the entire book for my students, but want them to be able to read from the actual book for future classes. In addition to a class set of "Jo Jo Makoons", I am also requesting some classroom organization essentials (pocket charts, sentence strips, etc).
