Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third graders love coming to school every day to learn reading, writing and math in two languages. They are eager readers and creative writers. They love playing fun games during our daily morning meeting, and sing songs to greet each other every morning. My students enjoy playing soccer, hula hoop, jump rope, and just chasing each other during recess time. The idea of going on field trips delight them very much.

My students always have a good attitude toward academic work.

They learn all their subjects in two languages, and having to bridge their understanding in what they are learning every day is the road that will take them to succeed in life, and they are up to it.

Most of my third graders come from the neighborhood, walk to school and have free breakfast and lunch. A lot of them come from single households and many times their parents work two jobs to make ends meet. Despite these circumstances, they are ready to face new challenges, and I always get greeted every morning with the same question, “What are we learning today?”

My Project

My students in third grade are learning this year during their reading block, not only to check for comprehension with questions such as, who is the character in this part of the book? and What just happened? but also making higher level predictions, such as grasping what has happened so far in the story, and to predict what might happen next. My students need to have available books in the classroom library to put in practice all their strategies they are learning to become better readers.

Series books in Spanish will provide opportunity to my third graders to explore their thinking skills when asked What was the author's purpose to write the book the way he did?

or Why did she include certain character in the story? or Why does the story end this way?

My students are hooked into reading series books. They especially enjoy reading The Magic Tree House Series, Tin Tin, Flyman, and many others.

Reading series books will also help my students to develop better writing skills. Studying at the ways other authors write will contribute to make them more aware of the kind of language is used so others can read what they write.
