Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inquisitive, creative, and enjoy learning in an active way. In fact, whenever given the opportunity to experiment, explore, or research new concepts, they are very receptive and happy to learn something first hand, rather than listen to it.

My students prefer learning whenever they can see a direct link between what they are exploring in class and its applications to real-life problems.

My teaching is very student-centered, and students do all of the work and most of the explaining; this allows them to take charge of their learning, and involves them deeply in the lessons. Whether we perform a lab or they are asked to complete a project, my students love to be given choices and to feel like their interests and opinions matter. As a result, I would like to use this platform to help my students obtain resources that they would otherwise not receive.

My Project

Over the past couple of years you have helped me create a classroom where students are fully engaged in the content taught and enjoy entering. With this new project I would like to ask for your help in teaching students hydroponic cultivation of foods. Most of my students live in an urban setting and are not familiar with the ideas of community gardens or the possibility to grow healthy, nutritious foods in a small and confined space.

By using the hydroponics systems requested students will be actively engaged in learning about water conservation, nutrient cycles, prevention of soil erosion, nutrient depletion and deforestation, discussing topics regarding environmental ethics as well as, possibly, providing a source of free food for our extended school community.

Many of my students are very interested in conservation and the future of the Earth; they are just not familiar with the options available if they do want to try to live in a sustainable way. With this project I am hoping to open the door to new questions and, possibly, new solutions to future (and present) problems.
