Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach in a program that serves recently arrived middle school refugee students from Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Students learn academic content while simultaneously acquiring the English language. In addition, they learn social and cultural norms of American schools.

Whether in a traditional setting -- or in the current virtual setting -- our students show up every day, motivated, excited to learn, and ready to beat the odds.

My Project

Students arrive in our program from countries across the world. Our current students arrived in 2021 from Afghanistan, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Senegal, and Malaysia. Many of our students experienced limited or interrupted schooling, so these learning tools will help provide background knowledge and promote learning from home.

Practicing math facts and writing at home will support students' growth in academics and the English language and assist them in reaching grade level expectations.

We look forward to welcoming more students this year from various countries, and supporting them in their educational journey in America.
