My Students

Our urban district has just added French as a second option for the middle schoolers at our school. We are the first of 7 middle schools in the district to offer this option. Many of my students are native Spanish speakers looking to expand their horizons. They are eager learners but need extra supports for building their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills given their various backgrounds and abilities. They deserve a well-rounded opportunity for language learning in spite of limited funding for the subject.

My Project

100% of the students at our school are from low-income families and qualify to receive free lunch. Furthermore, our students need our help by providing them with basic school supplies to allow them the opportunity to maximize their learning. I try to make our French lessons varied and engaging to reach all of my students and to teach them the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in French, as well as francophone culture.

This year has been more challenging for many reasons, but now that we're back from remote learning, students need as many opportunities as possible to put their pens to paper and create manipulatives to help them learn.

The problem is the lack of funding to help with these basic supplies. From paper to pens, it's only December and our supply is already running low. Many of the supplies that I'm requesting, I have been providing myself so the kids don't have to go without.
