Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine what is must feel like to be lost in your daily life? What it must feel like to not be able to communicate? To be stuck in a world all of your own without the supports to help you move forward?

I work in a public school setting located in an urban area surrounded by a low-income neighborhoods.

These children attend a school where most of the children are receiving free meals from school because their parents do not make enough money to financially support them. These children are between the ages of 4 and 6 and are diagnosed as having Autism. They suffer from an inability to communicate and socialize. These children have severe deficits in fine and gross motor skills. These students suffer from delays in sensory processing and are typically functioning at a level much lower than average peers of the same age. Most of these children are not capable of completing typical daily tasks independently such as toileting, tooth brushing, or feeding oneself. These children require a highly structured setting to promote academic learning, and they need visual schedules, visual cues, large picture symbols, communication boards and books, and adapted literature.

My Project

These children need laminating and Velcro in order to help meet the needs of their highly demanding structural environment. These children need certain supports in the classroom to help facilitate communication, learning, and behavioral support. Pictures that are printed need to be laminated to last all year. The Velcro helps as a way to make lessons interactive, and to adapt them to their individual needs. These children need more opportunities at both home and school in order to provide them with a well-rounded education. Currently these students are lacking many of these supports, and they can reach higher levels if the proper materials are in place to promote functional learning. Many of these children also have difficulty with sensory processing and require certain items to help with sensory processing and development. My students need certain items that they can use in their mouths to promote sensory processing and help with delays in the oral motor areas.

It is unfortunate that they are located in a low income neighborhood and that many of the families can not support the educational needs of the school community.
