My Students

As the school year approaches, I need to enhance my counseling curriculum to suport students in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. This year, I will be working hard to make my curriculum remote friendly and easily accessible to students even outside my caseload. This project consists mostly of books as I will be doing this largely through read alouds. At EVCS, our goal is for our students to be confident, kind, and ready to contribute towards positive social change in the community and world around them.

My curriculum this year will: advocate for socially conscious empathy and action; emphasize the inspirational uprisings that are happening across our country; and enhance social emotional well being.

My Project

Student sessions will incorporate read alouds that focus on my program topic for the month. We will then do activities to make connections to self and commuinty, as well as to individual student goals. I will also record read alouds for teachers and students throughout the school to access in their own Google Classrooms.

Some of the curriculum topics include: identity; gender roles, self-esteem, friendship, compromise and empathy.

Students will engage with these topics through books such as The Day You Begin, by Jaqueline Woodson; Mary Wears What She Wants, by Keith Negley; The Thing Lou Couldn't Do, by Ashely Spires; Mae's First Day of School, by Kate Berube, and Under My Hijab, by Hena Khan.

In addition, every month we will engage with a read aloud that is meant to facilitate engagement with anti-racist understanding, reflection and action. These books include: Leila in Saffron, by Rukhsanna Guidroz; Sulwe, by Lupita Nyong'o; Thunder Boy Jr., by Sherman Alexie; My Papi Has a Motorcycle, by Isabel Quintero; I Am Enough, by Grace Byers; and many more.
