Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve as a 4th grade ELL Reading and Language Arts teacher. My student population is 100% Hispanic. Most of my students scored at Levels 1 & 2 on the state mandated test. English is currently a second language for most of my students.

It is my desire to better equip my students with the tools that they need to improve their literacy skills.

It is for this reason that I have decided to kick off this much needed literacy project.

My Project

My project is to form a literacy center for my ELL students. Research shows that it is necessary to provide students with multiple opportunities to read and engage in meaningful experiences. Literacy centers facilitate problem-solving because students are able to explore, invent, discover, and create alone or with others at centers (Stone, 1996).

A literacy center will assist my students in reaching their literacy goals.

A literacy center is a physical area (or station) designated for specific learning purposes. It is designed to provide appropriate materials to help students work independently or collaboratively (with partners or in small groups) to meet literacy goals.
