My students are English Language Learners in grades K-5. We have a small converted office as a classroom and it seems we got last digs on furniture too! We've been using borrowed folding chairs that are too big and clumsy for small children. The folding chairs also get tangled up together.
Our school is a Title I school serving a low income population in Brooklyn.
My students' home languages are Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Haitian Creole, Korean and Spanish. We are a multicultural classroom. Some students come with no English at all and others come with limited English. I pick them up from their regular classrooms and bring them together as a group in my classroom.
My Project
My students are mostly in Kindergarten and First grade but I also service children through 5th grade. We are using an odd lot of left over chairs that are cumbersome and not comfortable. Students try to race to their desks to get the better chairs! I feel bad that they are so uncomfortable and that they have difficulty fitting the chairs under the desks. I have asked for new chairs for years but have gotten nowhere.
This gift of new classroom chairs will brighten up my classroom environment and give my students less of a distraction when they are at their desks.
The chairs I chose are just the right size and are a cheerful bright red.
