My Students

First the ESL laptop was stolen two years ago, and DonorsChoose saved the day with a netbook. That netbook has since taken a tragic fall and is now irreparable. Be the person to help high poverty ESL students learn English without an additional obstacle.

Our school is a high needs, low income transfer high school in the inner city.

Students who come to our school experience high quality individualized education. It is designed for students who have done poorly at other high schools, and it is their last opportunity to graduate high school. With just one ESL teacher, me, the data show that these students are some of the top excelling students and have the highest graduation rate. In order to continue this upward trend, the technological resources must be maintained.

My Project

This netbook computer will be used for MANY aspects of students' education. I am an academic advisor to high need ESL students and use the portable netbook to look up visual images on the Internet to modify lessons in the middle of class, hook this computer up to the projector, and also be able to take and share photos instantly with students during class time for educational purposes. On a data driven scale, this netbook is used to help students track their own learning by showing their progress on excel spreadsheets, tracking their attendance data and sharing it with them and most importantly, communicating with their teachers and their families, sometimes in the moment when needed. This quick and mobile device allows me to use web applications quickly that are interesting, engaging, fun and technologically advanced. Most of my students are juniors and seniors who will learn skills such as typing, writing their college essay, filling out applications and the importance of technology!

My school could have been a failing school, but it isn't because of the dedication of the teachers and the students.

ESL students are up against daily adversity, and the lack of technology only ups the ante on their possible educational setbacks. With your helpful donation, students will be able to learn computer skills such as Google Garth, typing essays, recording and tracking data, Rosetta Stone, completing college applications and advancing forward. Help an ESL student graduate high school!
