Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How well would you survive if you were placed in a foreign country without knowing the language? This scenario is pretty close to what my students face daily. They are in an all English class, and any extra help they get must come from the school because no one at home speaks English.

My students are a group of 120 English language learners in a Title 1 school; this means that they are economically challenged.

The average reading level in my classroom is 2.1 (this represents a second grade level), and I teach sixth grade so there is a great disparity. Part of this difference is due to my students' second language acquisition. My students are very aware that they have "holes" in their language skills and want to bridge the gaps. My students range from levels of beginner to advanced ESL, and they are at times in the same classroom. The desire is there, but the materials are not. The extent of technology in my classroom is an overhead projector and one teacher computer which often shows "blue screen". Access to the ESL programs would allow the students to differentiate an important part of their instruction. The programs are tailored to their individual needs. It would be like adding the icing on a cake. Cake is good, but cake with icing is so delicious.

My Project

My students are very techno savvy. They tend to learn more comfortably in the digital environment. This is why I have included the two computers. My classes are large enough that two computers would allow my students ample access to the programs. We live in an online world and my students can get the differentiation and specialization that they need from access to the district supported ESL Smart program. They need to be able to speak English in this world that we live in, and speak it well. I want them on an even playing field with native speakers when they have to compete. I want them to have as much access as they can. They may not be able to get it at home, but I want them to be able to practice their English in an environment where they can get help if needed, but also get what they need at their level. I want them to be truly bilingual. It will not only benefit them, but be an inspiration to their families and their community.

Our educational culture prides itself on making our students college and career ready for the future, but we can't expect our students to give us their best when we are denying them access to opportunities and/or giving them subpar materials.

If we want them to do better than we must do better. We are trying to climb the mountain to more rigorous endeavors, but we need the right equipment and opportunities. My students want to succeed. Please help me in this endeavor.
