We have a wonderful group of English as a Second Language (ESL) students who are always on time for class, ready to work and excited about coming to school. We (the foreign language department) were able to procure a wonderful program for use in our classrooms, but unfortunately we couldn't afford to buy enough that each student could get one. To make sure that the kids are learning to the best of their abilities, we have to photocopy materials for the students to use and that's where we play "Copy Machine Roulette!" There is one large copy machine in the school where we are supposed to request copies, but that machine is constantly breaking down and it has an aversion to copying anything that has too much black in it. We share a photocopier with four other departments, and it's always breaking down from overuse. We then hunt for other working copiers, but departments, which are lucky enough to have photocopiers, are reticent about letting other departments use theirs. I am a New York City Teaching Fellow and the last thing that I expected to be the most difficult job as a teacher was finding a way to make copies for the students in a timely manner. I have utilized the local Staples and use my printer at home to make copies, but our students would be better served if we had a copier in our department. These children are all here pursuing every immigrant's dream and it seems unfair for them to suffer because of the lack of a machine. We would really appreciate someone coming to our rescue as soon as possible as "Copy Machine Roulette" is standing in the way of our students getting the materials that they need on a timely basis.
