Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and they are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. They are also students who have special needs.
Parents do their best to provide the bare essentials that their kids need throughout the school year, but many times that is all that they can give them.
Many of the families have at least four kids in the school. Due to the current circumstances, it is a lot to ask a family to purchase materials when some of them most likely may have lost their jobs. Although the parents and the school community do their best to provide for the children, with the fear of what the future may bring, and the loss of jobs it will be harder to provide them with tools for learning.
My Project
The issue of slavery became the central focus of 19th-century politics. As students read, Trouble Don't Last, they will discuss the thematic ideas such as family, freedom, and prejudice. They will learn about what a slave experienced as they tried to escape using the Underground Railroad. They will also learn about major political issues regarding slavery, such as Black Codes, Emancipation Proclamation, Fugitive Slave Act, Compromise of 1850, and the 13th amendment in Social Studies. They will create a timeline that illustrates the growing concern of slavery during that time.
Additional studies will then focus on how the issue of slavery continued into the 20th century.
