My Students

I teach 8th graders in a suburban school in Queens, New York. I have 165 students that range from advanced students that take the Living Environment Regents course for high school credit, to general education classes that take General Science. In the general science classes, there are high performing students, English Language learners, and students with special needs that are in an ICT setting where there is a special education teacher that co-teaches with me to help all students achieve.

My Project

When reviewing for a test, there is nothing more boring than a worksheet. And I am sure you know, there is nothing exciting or engaging about paper and pencil work, especially in a science classroom.

If you have ever done an escape room, there is nothing but total engagement in problem solving.

The materials I am requesting will help create an escape the room experience for my students as they review concepts prior to a test. Students will have collaborate to answer questions correctly to open a series of locks to open their box. I can even use this as an opportunity to learn new concepts, where kids might have to look up new information to unlock the box. This can be used for every unit I teach.

Even though it will be awhile before students can physically engage in this type of activity, I can still use the materials where students still answer questions while I unlock the box for them. This is the kind of project that can be passed on to other teachers to use for any subject to make it fun for more students.
