Escape the Classroom - Problem Solving to Build Critical Thinking Skills

My students need a variety of different lock types, 3 UV markers, 3 UV lights, 3 book-safes, and 3 USB drives to make 3 Breakout Edu Challenge boxes for our classroom.

My Students

My students are college preparatory, high school, English students in their junior or senior year who come from a blue-collar, working-class town.

Your donation will help develop the writing, rhetoric, synthesis of arguments, and critical thinking in order to prepare them for success outside of high school.

Some students will go on to higher education, some to the military, and some into trades. I work hard to stay on top of the most recent trends in education so my students will have all of the advantages required to be successful after high school. Often times students will become apathetic towards the end of their high school career, just counting the days until they are "free," but with more exciting tasks that activate different parts of their brains, they are more apt to engage in the material being presented.

My Project

Breakout EDU is the immersive learning games platform. With these tools, I will be able to build my own Breakout EDU style kits to use in my classroom. These games encourage critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, all while accessing content knowledge.

The Breakout EDU kit allows for the facilitation of games where players use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open the locked box.

I will use locks, invisible markers/UV flashlights, safes, and locked boxes, along with storylines, puzzles, and codes which I've integrated into the content of the classroom.

There are also games that are shared and already developed on the Breakout Edu site and in various Breakout Edu user groups on social media. In the game, students are introduced to a problem that invites them to grapple with puzzles and challenges in order to unlock related locks. Students must work as a team in order to ultimately open the final lock and solve the game. Our world demands that people are skilled collaborators, problem-solvers, critical-thinkers, who can persevere through challenges. This game allows for students to improve these skills, while also learning required content
