My Students

Our school is a neighborhood school situated between two universities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite our status as a neighborhood school, we also serve students who live in various parts of the city of Philadelphia. This is our third year of existence as a project-based school, and we work hard to challenge our students' thinking with various math projects, inquiries, activities, and investigations.

We learn math through inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection.

Teaching students within this framework allows students to make connections as well as see the link between the math concepts they study in class. This method of study also allows students to practice making decisions and take on leadership roles within and outside of the classroom.

For our next project, we would like to have the opportunity to create our very own escape/adventure room. We hope to then share our adventure/escape room with other grades in our school. Math is not always a topic that everyone loves, but students are more willing to practice and learn math when presented in this format... and we are ready to take on this challenge!

My Project

Having seen the motivation to complete work increase with online escape rooms this year, I sometimes feel as if I have no choice but to explore this endeavor. After our first online math escape room, students began creating their own for other students to explore. We now need to get out of our seats and make the attempt to create our own math-based escape room. These materials will be a great start in converting our online work to real life.

These materials will be a great way for our students to take the lead in our math classroom year after year.
