Due to rising cases of COVID-19 at SA, students have spent the last week in remote learning--reverting back to learning strategies that they attempted to make work during the 2020-21 school year. This unique group of students, who are all learning to manage Autism Spectrum Disorder, vary in reading skill levels from middle school to early college. Additionally, their ability to engage with non-preferred topics can help or hinder their success in the ELA classroom. When faced with grade-level texts, such as The Scarlet Letter or A Tale of Two Cities, many of these students struggle to remain engaged. Not only the language but also the content of the novel is foreign to them. When faced with decoding a text at home, they often become frustrated because the mode of writing is too difficult to unravel on their own. It would be highly advantageous, therefore, to provide them with challenging and engaging texts that would empower them to read at home without much prompting.
My Project
Often English Language Arts classes target reading selections that students will read with the assistance of the teacher. Understanding is increased with the help of class discussions and supplemental activities that guide students to comprehension. The challenges of teaching reading skills and strategies during COVID-19 often require the removal of scaffolds and supports earlier than necessary. Without these, struggling readers lose opportunities for reteaching and practice they'd normally receive in the classroom.
The purpose of this project is to obtain reading selections written in contemporary, Standard American English that may be more easily accessible to students who are reading alone or without the support of another skilled reader.
Additionally, the subject matter of each text has been identified as that which will more widely engage the interests of students at SA. We have chosen topics that range from video games to science to history with the hope that texts focused on students' preferred topics will hold their attention more deeply and for longer periods of time.
