My Students
My students love to read. Over the years, I have procured a variety of high interest books for various reading levels. There are always a handful of students that, for a host of reasons, are reluctant to read. Allowing them to use my Kindle has solved that problem.
I have 26 4th graders that cover a wide range of reading abilities.
They want to read and are thirsty for books. Unfortunately, there are several that are reluctant readers. Some struggle with fluency, some with vocabulary and some with comprehension. Our school is quite small. We are a K-5 school with a student body of about 320. Our PTA is very active and generous but they, too are a small group.
My Project
Kindle Fires provide many beneficial features for reluctant readers, allowing them to be more successful when reading independently. There is a highlighting feature to mark important passages. There is a note taking feature where students can interact with the text by adding anecdotes and posing any questions they may have. In addition, at the touch of the screen, students can get the definition of vocabulary words and other words of which they are unsure. For students that have difficulty tracking the words the Kindle has a Word Runner feature that helps them focus and track better. It also serves to improve their reading rate and fluency. The text can be increased for ease of reading as well. Kindles also have a text to speech feature which allows the text to be read to the student. Many students have better oral comprehension skills because of their difficulties with the actual reading process and this feature is perfect for them.
Donations to this project will serve to improve the reading skills of my students this year and in the years to come.
These KIndles will change their lives as students become better readers, they become more confident in themselves and their abilities. They take more risks and begin to challenge themselves. These kids live in a world of technology and having Kindles will allow them to learn in their world.
