Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from a variety of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. They love new challenges and sharing diverse traditions as well as languages. As we begin to reorganize our classroom libraries to reflect the rich diversity and skill levels of our students, a goal is to re-purpose bins by bands rather than by level, to give the greatest access to students by encouraging them to read by interest level rather than reading level. Towards this end, we need the means to reorganize before students venture forth on reading adventures in their new classroom.

Having a color printer and a year’s supply of ink would allow my students to use mentor texts that reflect diversity to produce their own full-color pieces of writing in a variety of genres.

These would include fiction, realistic fiction, nonfiction research papers, opinion pieces, advertisements for products they will create, and fairy tales with characters that are diverse in appearance and tradition. It will allow book baskets to be clearly labeled in bright, engaging pictures and reading bands. In addition, having a color printer would encourage students to create three-dimensional dioramas that incorporate sculptures of historically significant figures and diverse fictional characters they construct out of tissue via paper mâché.

What better way to make learning come alive than to give them the tools for hands-on learning?
