Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an AP Psychology teacher in a high-need (Title 1) area of New York. My students are in grades 11 and 12 and have not had the opportunity to receive access to AP courses thus far in their high school career. A hope in introducing this course to students is that it will promote an AP going culture within the schools.

How would you feel if you entered an AP class in September, received an outline of the course, and were told that to pass the AP exam in May you had to read every night? Just imagine now that you aren't able to take the book home to read, but had to leave it in the class? It would be near impossible to read and prepare for an AP level course without the textbook in your possession at all times. Unfortunately, this is what my students face as we don't have the money for each of them to take home a textbook. They need to stay in the classroom so that all classes can use them.

The resources I need are AP Psychology textbooks for all of my students to be able to take home for the duration of the course. This will benefit them in many ways, the first and foremost of which will allow them to read at home and not come in before or after school just to use the textbook. Second, I will be able to assign readings nightly and not have to make a million copies! And lastly, they have an AP exam in May, of which constant access to a textbook could only improve their scores.

Your help on this project will insure that students in a high-poverty area of New York will gain access to AP level courses and high-level reading. Not only will this project make a difference in their high school careers, but could potentially gain them college credit by scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP exam in May. Therefore, opening the door to a college or university career which may not have been considered by my students otherwise.
