My Students

Many of my students are English Language Learners who are excited to learn English but struggle learning in any language. They love to use visuals to support their learning because pictures are international and each picture is like a thousand words in promoting understanding of concepts. I am a bilingual (Spanish/English) Speech Language Pathologist working with elementary aged children. The majority of my caseload are children of immigrants or children who are immigrants from Latin America. Despite working remotely my students showed up, ready to work! I work in Sunset Park Brooklyn, New York where is a poor, working class community. This school year I will be working remotely. My biggest challenge is finding therapy material that are in both English and Spanish as the theory that drives my therapeutic intervention is to "meet the child where they are" when it comes to which language we choose to work in. I often use Teacher Pay Teacher as a therapy resource as they many items in both Spanish and English.

My Project

It is critical to a child's success in school to understand what is being asked of them and how to respond to it. By sending children homework in both Spanish and English children will progress in the English learning levels while advancing in their overall development in comprehension and expression of their thoughts and ideas regardless of the language they are speaking in.

It also allows the children's parents - who often do not speak English - understand what the child is working on and allows them to help their child with their homework.

Remote learning is the most successful when it is done in a way to make parents partners in the process.
