Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one-way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school, providing essential learning tools is vital in supporting student learning.

My Project

Books and literature have been an integral part to our daily learning and interaction through distance learning. Students haven been captivated by the titles we have read together and two of their favorites have been Hello, Universe and Mañanaland. We received our copies thanks to a previous project and students got to take their own copy home to keep. They loved the stories, the characters, the setting and all the small details they connected to.

These books have characters students can personally identify with, feel seen and valued.

Virgil the main character in Hello, Universe was an extremely shy kid who overcame a bully and students were intrigued with his journey. It was a great story of the preteen stage, friendships and overcoming difficulties. Students instantly connected to Virgil and gave great insight as we read together. In Mañanaland the main character, Max, went on a journey looking for an important piece of his life. In that journey we discovered a young boy who loved soccer, spoke Spanish and handled well the unknown. My students love soccer, speak Spanish and made many connections to Max and his family. They truly saw themselves in this book.

Students were deeply invested in both texts and I want to include these titles in my yearly curriculum. With a class set of each title I will be able to give this opportunity to all of my future classes. An opportunity of inclusion and equity in the literature we read.
