My Students

Imagine being a student who is new to the United States and who doesn't speak English entering a large urban public school for the first time. This is the reality for my students. Their cultural backgrounds, experiences, and languages vary widely. Some students are refugees, some have experienced extended disruptions in their formal education, and some have special education needs, including intellectual disabilities and physical health impairments. Their home languages include Chinese, Nepali, Arabic, Turkish, Amharic, Hindi and Spanish. My students are English Language Learners (ELLs) in two different Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade schools in Baltimore City. They are motivated to learn English and succeed academically.

My students need support to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, which range from very basic (for beginners and newcomers) to intermediate.

All students, including my students, will take standardized tests throughout the year. However, ELLs have an additional English Language Proficiency test. Most of these tests are given on computers and require students to listen to or read questions and type responses. With just one computer specifically assigned to my students at this time, they lack consistent opportunities to access computer based education programs and strengthen their skills.

My Project

English Language Learners depend on visuals to learn vocabulary. Color printers, laminators, and dry erase markers are essential to creating long lasting materials and manipulatives. Chromebooks allow students to access online literacy games and provide the means for students to practice listening and writing under similar circumstances as the standardized tests.

These materials increase learning opportunities and make activities accessible to students regardless of their proficiency level or special needs.

Students will use these materials everyday during their ESOL sessions to strengthen phonemic awareness by grouping word and picture cards, build vocabulary, and practice grammar (which is not explicitly taught in the general education classroom, but is an expectation on the English Language Proficiency test).
