This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Playing in sync with your fellow band members is an experience you should not live without. When you can bring a crowd to their feet or tears to their eyes by the sheer power and beauty of your unified sound you know that you are a part of something that is greater then one person alone.

My students live in a poverty-stricken, inner-city neighborhood in Illinois.

Just making it to school can be a life or death situation for some. However, once inside the school, our students are safe and ready to grow through learning and experience. My kids are the type to crack a joke or bust a move whenever the mood fits, but if you show them that you are truly there to support them, they will aim high and succeed with your guidance.

My Project

With these accessories and materials I would be able to supply my students with more reeds so that they can continue to learn and improve on their clarinets and saxophones. I would also be able to supply my percussionists with their very own set of sticks so that they may have a way to practice at home and increase personal ownership of the band. With the cleaning swabs and oils, we would be able to maintain the set of 40 instruments that we share with 150 students. The instruments last much longer with proper maintenance and care. With these accessories and materials, we would be able to continue playing and preparing for our end concert goal without worrying about running out of our reeds or necessary maintenance accessories.

My students cannot easily access many opportunities to succeed in life.

They do not get many breaks or chances to stand out above the rest. Music can be the catalyst that sets their true selves free. No matter what they go through, what troubles or joys come their way, music will always be an outlet to express what they feel inside. My students deserve an opportunity to succeed with the materials to create beautiful music. When they are able to create music they will have ownership of their lives.
