My Students

My students are the future scientists and mathematicians that will save our planet. I teach in an urban district that is Connecticut's first all-magnet district. My school is the district's STEM magnet school and we serve approximately 600 students grades preK-5. I have taught in this district for 23 years, 18 of them at this school, and have taught grades 1, 2, 3, and 5.

My students love to dig into investigations and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.

Whether they are working in our school gardens, conducting inquiry investigations in our science lab, or leading taste tests of healthy foods in our cafeteria, they give it their all.

They come from 20 different communities, but openly embrace their differences and welcome the opportunity to be members of our school, and even our classroom, community. Every student has an important role to play and unique insights to share. Together, we are more than the sum of our parts!

My Project

The last few months of the 2019-2020 school year came as a surprise to most of us and found the majority of schools and their communities unprepared for the distance learning that was required. My fifth graders struggled being away from our classroom and their friends; and their families struggled with the fear and uncertainty of day to day life. Many families found themselves out of work and with limited resources to help their children continue their learning from home.

Our district provided fifth graders with a Chromebook and made sure they all had access to the internet.

We found a good program to use to share resources and post assignments for students, and we spent hours each week on the phone, FaceTime, and TEAMS meeting with students and families - most of that time was spent addressing technology issues.

Bottom line is - the laptops alone were not enough to help students succeed. Students struggled with our programs using only the touch pad on the laptop to use tools designed for a mouse. They also found it difficult to concentrate and hear our lessons with the distractions in their homes. Some families were able to purchase mice and headsets for their children. Others were not so fortunate. This added to the widening gap in students' access to resources. Students with the materials were able to complete their assignments with fairly little frustration. Students with no mouse or headset frequently became so frustrated, they simply quit trying.

I wish that our district had the resources to purchase these supplies for every child, but with the added demands of materials necessary to keep our community safe from COVID, we just don't have any funding for additional technology supplies. I want ALL of my fifth graders to have EQUAL ACCESS!
