My Students

The students that this project will benefit our students with disabilities, primarily children on the autism spectrum. Many students diagnosed with autism have difficulties with speech, language, communication, social skills, emotional skills, behavioral skills, activities of daily living, fine and gross motor development, and sensory processing skills. All of my students are elementary school age and range from 4-10 but academic and developmental delays make it difficult for students to learn at the same pace as their typically developing peers. Not only are my students facing difficulties due to their disability but these children also attend an inner-city Title I school, and many face language barriers, or social injustices as well. However, despite all of the challenges they face daily, they always amaze me when they show progress towards learning something new.

My Project

For this project, we are requesting hands-on manipulatives to help provide concrete evidence when teaching important academic and life skills to students with disabilities. Students learn the most when the content provided is fun and engaging and these materials are just that! Most of what is taught must be adapted to differentiate for the variety of students so the laminating paper will come in handy in order to adapt images for students with communication and motor delays. Students will also be able to use the activity more than once if it is preserved with laminating paper. The materials mostly requested are to help students learn about different wellness and health topics such as social-emotional learning, learning through movement and exercise, learning about healthy eating, and good hygiene habits. Providing students with hands-on activities and manipulatives will help to increase understanding and learning of the same content area as other students but adapted based on individual learning levels.
