Envisage... Bringing Art To Us!

My students need art supplies, and more than what our limited school budget can supply. We have marker and crayons, but just imagine what we can do with paintbrushes, aprons, 5 table easels, 50 canvases, and a printer with replacement ink.

My Students

Our school is in West Oakland, CA, an area besieged by poverty, and in the midst of all the ills that poverty provides such as high in employment, gang activity, drugs, crime, and broken spirits. Sadly, we do not have the funds to offer ART. The funding of my art project may help to ameliorate some of that pain.

Poverty is invasive and seeps into our public school.

Although our school is funded by the District, there is often not enough money to supplement the curriculum with special events and activities that are known to shape minds and allow for dreams to flourish. My plan is to bring about regular exposure of the arts to the children. San Francisco, which is bloated with culture, is a short distance away, but the number of children who have ventured out of their immediate West Oakland neighborhood, sadly, is few. We are a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school, and are incorporating/leaning towards becoming STEAM - the "A" incorporates Art. So, if we can't go to art- why not have art come to us?! By supplying our class with art-esque accouterments, I can open a new world of possibilities for future options, and perhaps, by default, encourage focus and self-esteem, which will certainly impact academic achievement. The children's art will inspire them!

My Project

Through reading, listening to stories about, and being able to identify and produce art like Basquiat, Van Der Zee, Picasso, or Augusta Savage, the children will learn about an entire new world! Additionally, when we use a digital camera and printer to showcase the childrens' art projects to their parents, the children will witness the pride and admiration that their accomplishments bring to their families. But most of all, I understand the relationship between focus and academic achievement. Students will transfer the boost in self-esteem and that will bring out the best in children because they have produced something from their personal creativity, and independent talent. Students will paint. They will wear smocks. They will use easels and paintbrushes. They will use materials that many of them have only heard of. The children will become artists, and that accomplishment can never be taken away from them. The children will realize their prowess and perhaps, see their world in an entirely different way! Art!

This is not merely art; this is an opportunity for kids to envisage.

This project will help the children newly imagine, contemplate, visualize, envision, picture; conceive of, think of; foresee themselves differently than before- a way to expand their horizons. And most of all, they will have fun learning! The connection between self-esteem and academic achievement is powerful. I imagine that their young lives will positively be impacted through this exposure to art in a way that will amaze!
