Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in the heart of the city. Most of our students' families come from different countries, for many it is their first time attending a school in the United States. What makes our school so special is the Environmental STEM program we have had for the past two years. Students are exposed to native plants, butterfly host and nectar plants, herb and vegetable gardens, a worm compost bin, a rain barrel program to promote water conservation, recycling program and finally aquaponics!

STEM students in our school truly love making a difference and promoting environmental awareness.

Every Thursday and Friday you will find at least 40-50 students participating in an after school program where they write a newsletter about the Everglades, learn about endangered and threatened animals and brainstorm ways to make our school as GREEN as possible!

My Project

These materials will greatly help our students with project based learning activities. Our students will have a chance to get outside of the classroom and get their hands "dirty" while using critical thinking skills to solve environmental issues at school. For example, we have several exotic lizards and birds that have been feasting on our caterpillars. Students will be able to use the materials to solve problems like this. I am ordering butterfly net habitats and water tubes in order to begin a butterfly nursery in our garden. Students will be able to find caterpillars and place them in the habitat with the plant that the caterpillar eats, the water tubes will keep the plants fresh. In addition, we also have several aquaponics systems in the STEM lab, students will be able to test for water quallity using the water testing kits. They will also be able to build their own system and use clay pellets to keep plants in place, the tubing will provide water circulation for the system as well. Finally, for our worm bin I am ordering thermometers and bins. Students will use the thermometers to check the temperature of the worm bin to ensure that it is at a safe level.

The donations we receive from this project will help students solve problems to the environmental issues at our school.

They will be able to get creative with their solutions and test for accuracy.
